Students will be creating their own story to go along with a quilted border. Their stories will be personal narratives, drawn from a memories, experiences, or interests they wish to display on their story quilt. Many thanks for the donations and volunteers who helped cut thousands of 2 in fabric squares - Thank you!
Faith Ringgold is an American artist, writer, and teacher best known for her narrative story quilts that blend writing, traditional crafts, and painted canvas. She adapted her work "Tar Beach" into a children's book of the same name. The story is a whimsical remembrance of Ringgold's childhood memory of her family's tradition of evening picnics on the roof of their NYC apartment building. In one excerpt, the young girl's father is denied a place in the union because of the color of his skin. In introducing the artist, I pointed out the fact that some of her stories dealt with areas of civil rights. Our school's remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. last Monday provided a point of connection for students.

Our mission this week: Stick Figures! (Correction: ACTION Figures) Taken by themselves, stick figures are often frowned upon by the art teacher establishment, sometimes being banned from use in the art room altogether. However, when done correctly, the stick figure is an essential piece to the puzzle of drawing the complex human body. Artists may use terms like gesture or "block in" to refer to the process of using simplified lines and shapes to "map out" the correct proportions, placements, and essential movements of a figure they are drawing. My sketchbook challenge to students this week has been to draw stick figures that demonstrate expression and movement by adding two simple ingredients to the typical stick person: KNEES and ELBOWS! Adding bendable joints solves many common problems proportion and expression of movement. We will apply our new figure drawing skills and we continue to work on our 3d art projects using chromadepth 3d glasses. Thursday art classes used the Sketchpad 3.5 app on the chromebook to experiment with action figures. Our artistic inspiration is Keith Haring, an artist students will recognize from our lessons on art with a message.
